Extra Care Home
A new ‘scalable’ concept for extra care home developments across the UK for a national PLC. The building, conceived as a series of oversized terrace houses, provides 5500 m2 of accommodation and comprises 60 rooms, amenity spaces, gardens and car parking.
Chain Street is an Extra Care development located to the west of Bradford City Centre in an extensive area ear marked for future regeneration.
The design is the result of the Client commissioning MDH to propose a new ‘scalable’ concept for their future extra care home developments across the UK. MDH proposed a simple architectural model which focused the design around a series of bold moves that maximize the impact of a limited budget.
The building is articulated as an L-shaped form, and is conceived as a series of ‘large houses’ set around a ‘village square’. This provides a more domestic impression of the building, creating something familiar to residents and provoking a sense of calmness and security.
The envelope is made of a restricted palette, predominantly brick, and the articulation is limited to a change of brick colour and ‘saw tooth’ roof to each house to break down the visual mass of the building, and emphasis the separate nature of each ‘house’.
The ground floor internal arrangement is focused around a flexible communal space. Other functions are located adjacent to this space, ensuring the public services have a critical mass forming an active, vital heart to the building and engendering a sense of community.
